Breast Reconstruction in Fairfax, VA

Breast cancer treatment can leave behind serious emotional trauma, especially for patients who have had a mastectomy. At Plastic Surgery and Dermatology Associates, we offer breast reconstruction to help patients in Fairfax, Washington DC, Arlington, and Annandale, VA, and the surrounding DMV region restore their sense of self.

What is Breast Reconstruction?

Breast reconstruction is a surgery performed to restore the shape and size of the breasts following a mastectomy. Breast reconstruction can help breast cancer patients restore their femininity, confidence, and sense of wholeness and well-being. Some patients choose to undergo breast reconstruction during their mastectomy procedure, but breast reconstruction can also be performed months or years after a mastectomy. Patients may choose to delay this procedure based on their overall health, cancer staging, or their type of cancer treatment. As an expert in reconstructive surgery and microsurgery, Dr. Mirali is prepared to help you navigate your breast reconstruction so that you can make the best possible decisions regarding your treatment.

How Much Does Breast Reconstruction Cost?

The cost of your breast reconstruction procedure at Plastic Surgery and Dermatology Associates will depend on a number of factors. During your initial consultation, we will review your treatment goals in order to develop a treatment plan that is tailored to your personal needs. Once this treatment plan is developed, we will be able to provide you with the exact cost of your procedure. In some cases, a portion of your treatment may be covered by health insurance. If this is the case, we will determine your coverage at this time as well. In an effort to keep our treatments accessible, we are proud to accept CareCredit® financing in addition to traditional payment methods.

How is Breast Reconstruction Performed?

Dr. Mirali specializes in implant and soft tissue reconstruction of breast tissue. His expertise in advanced microsurgical techniques means he can rebuild the breast using tissue taken from another place on your body. He will guide you through the details, helping you make the best choice from several microsurgical options, including:

  • DIEP flap reconstruction: Reconstructs the breast using skin, fat tissue and small blood vessels from the abdomen, but doesn’t remove any abdominal muscles.
  • SIEA flap reconstruction: The same as DIEP but takes tissue associated with different blood vessels.
  • TUG flap reconstruction: Some women may not be able to use abdominal tissue because they don’t have enough fat or they have scarring from previous surgery. A good option is TUG reconstruction, which takes skin and fat from the inner thigh.
  • TRAM flap reconstruction: Tissue for the new breast comes from your lower abdomen, but a portion of muscle is also used in the reconstruction.

In some cases, a combination of flap reconstruction and implants will be used. In any case, Dr. Mirali strives to produce the results that will best fulfill your treatment goals. Your breast reconstruction procedure will be designed around your personal preferences and treatment goals to ensure the best results possible.

What is the Recovery Like After Breast Reconstruction?

After a breast lift, patients often experience bruising, swelling, and tenderness in the breasts. During the first week or two, patients may have to take time off of work and reduce their level of activity to ensure that the body can heal properly. Most patients are fully recovered about six weeks after their procedure, but this can vary depending on the extent of surgery performed. During your consultation, Dr. Mirali will provide you with specific recovery instructions based on your personal treatment plan.
