Taking care of your skin can help slow the effects of aging, but there’s no way to stop it completely. Over time, muscles lose tone, thinning skin loses elasticity and becomes dry, and the underlying fat that cushions skin thins out and accumulates in pockets. Add damaging sun exposure and facial expressions that work the same muscles throughout your lifetime, and you get age-related changes such as wrinkles, red blotches, dark spots, spider veins, and loose skin above or below your eyes.
Dr. Shahabadi will carefully evaluate your history and examine your skin to determine which treatment is best. A variety of procedures are available, but she especially recommended these 3 treatments for facial skin:
Cortex™ System: The Cortex System allows Dr. Shahabadi to use two different laser wavelengths to treat facial aging. One of the lasers affects the surface, which removes fine lines and wrinkles. The second laser penetrates to deeper layers, so it diminishes moderate lines and creases, improves skin texture, and eliminates discoloration. Heat produced by the lasers also stimulates the production of collagen, which gives skin strength and support.
Pellevé ®: This system uses radiofrequency to heat deep layers of skin without affecting the upper layers. Like lasers, the heat triggers skin to produce more collagen, which helps diminish fine lines and wrinkles on your face, including smile lines and wrinkles around the eyes.
IPL Photofacial: IPL stands for intense pulsed light. IPL treatment uses pulses of broadband light to heat the skin and stimulate collagen. The IPL Photofacial device treats sun-damaged skin, fine lines and wrinkles, age spots, dilated blood vessels, redness, and large pores.
Recovery time is different for laser, radiofrequency, and photofacial treatments. With Pellevé, your skin may get a little red from the heat, but you can return to your normal routine right after the treatment. The Cortex and IPL procedures cause skin to look and feel like a sunburn, but whether you’ll need a few days to recuperate depends on the depth of the treatment.
