Breast Augmentation Q & A

Plastic Surgery and Dermatology Associates LLC

What is breast augmentation?

Most people think of breast augmentation as a surgical procedure to enlarge breasts — and it is — but it can also be used to change the shape of the breast for women who want to make their breasts more symmetrical or rounded.

If you’re considering breast augmentation, you may have a size in mind, but other factors influence how the implant will look after surgery, like the natural contour and size of your chest and ribcage. Dr. Mirali’s years of experience in breast augmentation will target issues you may not consider and help ensure you have a clear vision of the end result.

How can you choose the best breast size?

One of the most important discussions you’ll have with Dr. Mirali focuses on choosing a final breast size that meets your expectations. It can be hard to imagine exactly how your new breast size will look on your body, but before-and-after photos and seeing the real implant can help. Dr. Mirali takes the time to answer your questions and explore options before surgery so that you’re satisfied after the procedure is done.

What types of breast implants are available?

While you can choose from a variety of implant options, such as round, smooth, and textured implants, there are a few primary types:

  • Saline implants: Made from a silicone outer shell that’s filled with sterile saline, or salt water. If a rupture occurs, it’s easy to detect because the implant collapses. Saline implants are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for breast augmentation in women age 18 and older. (Ref 1, paras 1 and 2)
  • Silicone implants: Made from a silicone shell filled with silicone gel, which has a more natural feel. Silicone implants don’t collapse when they begin to leak, so regular visits to check for leakage are recommended. They’re FDA-approved for breast augmentation in women age 22 years and older.
  • Gummy bear implants: A silicone implant, but the gel is thicker so they hold their shape better than traditional silicone implants.

Another surgical option called fat transfer breast augmentation takes fat from other parts of your body and injects it into your breasts. This procedure is only recommended for women who want a small increase in breast size.

If you’re considering breast augmentation, call Plastic Surgery and Dermatology Associates to schedule a consultation and learn about the possibilities.
