Otoplasty

If you are self-conscious about the shape or size of the ears, an otoplasty can help you enhance the ears for an improved facial balance and overall appearance. Plastic Surgery and Dermatology Associates offers otoplasties to residents of Fairfax, Washington DC, Arlington and Annandale, VA, and the nearby communities.

What is an Otoplasty?

An otoplasty, commonly referred to as ear surgery, is a cosmetic procedure designed to correct the shape, size, or position of the ears. Ears that are large in size or protrude significantly from the head can be a source of self-consciousness, and can make the ears the subject of teasing or bullying. For this reason, otoplasty is one of the few cosmetic surgeries that are often performed on children as well as adults. Ear surgery can enhance the ears by placing them at a more reserved position, improving facial balance and increasing confidence. Otoplasty techniques can also be used to improve the shape or size of the ears or repair the ears after injury.

How Much Does an Otoplasty Cost?

The cost of your ear surgery procedure at Plastic Surgery and Dermatology Associates will depend on a number of factors. During your initial consultation, we will review your treatment goals in order to develop a treatment plan that is tailored to your personal needs. Once this treatment plan is developed, we will be able to provide you with the exact cost of your procedure. In an effort to keep our treatments accessible, we are proud to accept CareCredit® financing in addition to traditional payment methods.

How is an Otoplasty Performed?

All ear surgeries are performed using general anesthesia to ensure optimal patient safety and comfort. With an otoplasty, incisions are typically made in areas that are concealed, like behind the ears or within the natural folds of the ear. Once incisions are made, Dr. Mirali will manipulate or remove cartilage to produce the desired results. He may also employ an ear pinning technique to decrease the distance that the ears protrude form the head. Once the desired results are achieved, the incisions are closed and the treatment will be complete.

What is the Recovery Like After an Otoplasty?

After an ear surgery, patients can expect mild swelling and bruising in the ears that can last for several weeks. These effects are worst for the first two weeks, but can continue for as long as a month afterwards. During your recovery, it is important to take special care with the ears, avoiding sleeping directly on them or participating in activities that could cause injury. During your consultation, Dr. Mirali will provide you with specific recovery instructions based on your personal treatment plan.

Are the Results from My Otoplasty Permanent?

The results from your ear surgery will be permanent, but it is important to remember that normal effects of aging can still occur. The ears are one of the few parts of the body that never stop growing, meaning that patients may notice subtle, gradual changes in the ears after several years.
