Skin Cancer Reconstruction

Skin cancer reconstruction is an important part of skin cancer treatment, as it can help return your skin to a normal, healthy appearance. At Plastic Surgery and Dermatology Associates, we are proud to offer skin cancer reconstruction as well as other skin cancer services to the residents of Fairfax, Washington DC, Arlington, Annandale, VA, and neighboring cities.

What is Skin Cancer Reconstruction?

In order to successfully treat skin cancer, all of the affected skin tissue must be removed. Unfortunately, this can leave patients with scars and large areas of abnormal skin tissue. Skin cancer reconstruction can help restore skin to its natural appearance, helping to reduce the signs of skin cancer treatment.

How Much Does Skin Cancer Reconstruction Cost?

The cost of your skin cancer reconstruction at Plastic Surgery and Dermatology Associates can vary, and may be covered by health insurance. If this is the case, we will determine your coverage during your consultation in order to provide you with the exact cost of your treatment. In an effort to keep our treatments accessible, we are proud to accept CareCredit® financing in addition to traditional payment methods.

What is Cancer Screening?

Cancer screening is the best way to catch skin cancer early, maximizing the chances of successfully treating it. The best cancer screening technique is a full body skin exam, which will examine all areas of the skin for suspicious growths. If something suspicious is discovered, a biopsy will be performed to determine if the growth is cancerous.

What Are Benign Skin Cancer Growths?

In some cases, suspicious growths such as moles can be benign. A benign growth means that it is not cancerous, and no treatment is needed. However, it is important to monitor the shape, size, and color of suspicious moles and other growths, as changes in any of these qualities can be a sign of skin cancer.

What Types of Skin Cancer Treatments Are Available?

The treatment of skin cancer involves removing the cancerous tissue to prevent it from spreading further throughout the body. In most cases, when cancer is detected early, simple excision techniques can be used to remove the cancerous growth. This means that the affected area will be surgically removed from the skin. For more severe cases, Mohs surgery is often the recommended treatment. With this technique, cancerous skin is removed layer by layer. After each layer, the skin will be examined to ensure that no cancer remains. This is an ideal technique because it minimizes the damage done to healthy skin tissue.

What is the Melanoma Treatment Like?

Melanoma is the most serious type of skin cancer, which is often detected due to changes in the appearance of moles on the skin. This condition can develop anywhere on the body. Melanoma treatment can be performed using surgical excision or Mohs surgery.

What is the Actinic Keratosis Treatment Like?

Actinic keratoses are rough, scaly patches of skin that develop due to high levels of sun exposure. They typically develop on areas of the body that are frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, neck, and arms. Although they pose no immediate health threat, they can develop into skin cancer if left untreated. Topical solutions can provide an effective treatment in most cases. Alternatively, the affected tissue may be frozen or scraped off.

What is Basal Cell Carcinoma Treatment Like?

Basal cell carcinoma is a skin cancer that most often develops in areas that receive lots of sun exposure, like the face, neck, and arms. Surgical excision can be effective for eliminating this cancer in the early stages, and Mohs surgery is also an effective option.

What is Squamous Cell Carcinoma Treatment Like?

Like basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma also develops in areas due to excessive sun exposure. This cancer typically grows and spreads slowly, but treatment should be received promptly to minimize complications. Like basal cell carcinoma, excision techniques and Mohs surgery are effective treatment options.

How is Skin Cancer Reconstruction Performed?

If your cancer was caught early, you may not need reconstructive surgery. In some cases, however, removing the cancer also means losing a lot of skin and tissue. In these cases, skin flaps and skin grafting techniques can be used to transplant healthy skin to the area where skin cancer was eliminated. For patients who do not need Mohs surgery, skin cancer reconstruction can be performed in combination with the skin cancer excision surgery.
